As early as 1995, the American Pain Society (APS)
advocated that pain should join blood pressure, pulse, temperature
and respirations and be assessed with the same zeal as the other
vital signs. In response, the Joint Commission on Accreditation
of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) mandated new guidelines, effective
January 1, 2001, which clearly defines appropriate assessment
and management of all types of pain.
This course will discuss; current trends in pain
management; understanding pain and suffering; principles of pain
management; patient perspectives and responsibilities; new documentation
requirements; and evidence from the medical records to objectively
translate pain into demonstrative evidence to authenticate, quantify
and demonstrate causal link.
